Patent keeps iPhone signals clean

illustration of detector inside the iphone

A detector chip placed inside the hardware could be trained to recognize certain classes of add-ons or individual models and warn the user if a device (familiar or otherwise) could disrupt the main signal; this could occur through either an audio or a visual cue, Apple writes. Synchronizing the main device could provide an updated list of accessories to prevent false alarms.

Talking about Apple

Walt notes that that makes it one of the most ubiquitous pieces of software out there–and it’s predominantly on Windows machines. “That makes Apple one of the biggest developers of Windows software around,” Walt observes. Jobs: “That’s right. … It’s like offering a glass of ice water to people in hell.”

Google cooking up more apps for the iPhone and other details

So The Seattle Times got a sit down with the rather guarded Glenn Lurie, AT&T's man on the ground for the iPhone. While he didn't give much up in the way of the phone's finer details, he did have one takeaway that left us interested. When asked about the mass skepticism over the iPhone's price, he replied "... There are other things -- you have the widgets, some of the Google applications that are coming -- there are just so many things here that the price will not be an issue." Now, we don't want to get all weird here and read tea leaves, but he did say Google applications (as in plural), so we think it's safe to say Google has more planned than just Gmaps for the iPhone. We wouldn't be surprised to see a Google news reader, Gmail, or even Gcal apps on there, but given the fact that Apple already has its own agenda for mail, calendaring and the like, it might stand to reason the iPhone won't be locking its users out of 3rd party add-on apps after all. Another interesting detail: "people are going to be asked to have an unlimited [data] package" with the iPhone. Hm, no surprise there. Ok, discuss / argue amongst yourselves.

Google Aps on the iPhone

When the iPhone was announced, Steve Jobs indicated that the phone would be a closed system. So, if there were going to be additional applications added to the iPhone, Apple was going to be the one who provided them. Many critics panned this announcement saying this would prevent the iPhone from making any dents in the corporate market, currently dominated by RIM.

In an interesting interview in the Seattle Times with Glenn Lurie, the guy from ATT in charge of the iPhone, he revealed Google Apps would be available as a “widget” on the iPhone.

There are other things — you have the widgets, some of the Google applications that are coming — there are just so many things here that the price will not be an issue.

The interesting thing of this quote is that not only will some of not all Google Apps be available on the iPhone, but other widgets will be made available. I have always contended that while the system may not be as wide open and Palm where anyone can release apps, it will be open to a certain extent where niche applications will be able to added to the iPhone.

25 million per year by '09

For iPhone, analyst Shebly Seyrafi is modeling Apple to sell around 17 million for fiscal 2008 (12-month period ending Sept. '08) and 25 million in fiscal 2009 (ending Sept. '09) -- well ahead of Apple's own stated estimate of 10 million units in fiscal 2008. Seyrafi even went as far as to predict that there is room for "ample upside" to his already aggressive iPhone targets. Read full article here

500 million Samsung NAND flash chips

Apple is placing an order for 500 million Samsung NAND flash chips this month. While the report claims these chips will be used in iPhones and iPods, the number seems a little optimistic, even for Apple’s hugely successful nano and shuffle music player to account for. Furthermore, the report claims these chips will be used in iPods and iPhones only from from June 2007 to December 2007, which leads to some questions…
